21 gang members arrested in Brooklyn murders, and allege shootings

BROOKLYN, New York City (WABC) — Authorities in New York City announced on Tuesday that 21 alleged gang members have been charged in connection with two murders, three non-fatal shootings, and two acts of reckless endangerment involving the shooting of a firearm as well as a gunpoint robbery and other violence.

Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez and NYPD Commissioner James O’Neill held a press conference detailing the allegations, saying one of the murders involved a father and his two sons — who are now co-defendants — with evidence of the father coaching his sons on how to avoid arrest.

They also showed video of one defendant firing his gun out the back door of his house into the yard, apparently testing it in the middle of the day, and another firing his gun from a rooftop in the middle of the day.

The suspects were identified as:

–Rean Awong, aka Rezzy, 22, of Flatbush
–Lorenzo Bailey, aka Renzoo, 30, of Flatbush
–Shaquille Benjamin, aka Trini, 19, of East Flatbush
–Ameth Best, aka Rusty, 22, of East New York

–Zidon Clarke, aka Bones, 20, of Flatbush
–Christopher Cooper, aka Sixo, 18, of Crown Heights
–Sherrod Craig, aka Rah Cash, 19, of Jamaica, Queens
–Gishanie Gray, aka Shanie, 18, of East New York
–Tarell Herbert, aka Skrell, 25, of East Midwood
–Khalil Irving, aka Kha, 18, of East Flatbush
–Travis Laroc, aka Trav, 17, of East Flatbush
–Omar Peters, aka Sasa, 24, of Flatlands
–Keemari Porter, aka Kush, 19, of East New York
–Khaysean Porter, aka Khay, 21, of Brownsville
–Walter Porter, aka Hit Man, 41, of Elizabeth
–Barrington Songue, aka Pudge Boom, 26, of Flatlands
–Dandre Stanford, aka Troopa, 20, of Cambria Heights
–Tahir Thomas, aka TeeJay, 18, of Canarsie
–Darren Wilson, aka Thirdd, 19, of Canarsie

“These defendants terrorized the streets of Brooklyn by opening fire on perceived rivals and recklessly firing their guns, including in broad daylight, endangering innocent bystanders,” Gonzalez said. “In one instance, an innocent 15-year-old boy was killed when he was mistaken for a rival gang member.”

Gonzalez said that 19 of the defendants were arraigned before Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice Martin Murphy last week on a 65-count indictment in which they are variously charged with second-degree murder, second-degree attempted murder, first-, second-, third- and fourth-degree conspiracy, second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, second-degree criminal use of a weapon, first-degree reckless endangerment and related charges.

They face various penalties, depending on their age and the charges, ranging from probation to 25 years to life in prison.
