First Sergeant Jonathan Perok said five officers fired at the man. Police did not say how many times the man was shot, nor if the man shot at police. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he later died.
The shooting happened in a gated community, Prince William County Police said in a tweet. No entry was permitted into the community Thursday night, per management.
The man was only identified as a 79-year-old from Dumfries.
The involved officers will be placed on paid leave, Perok said.
